The Equestrian Vampire - Final Act of this short vampire story. At the door he paused, almost forgetting the most important item of his cowboy garb, outside of the Stetson hat, of course. Grasping the rusty spurs he knelt and began the arduous task. Fifteen minutes and twenty cuts later he rose then ambled towards the medicine cabinet where the first aid kit was located. He healed swiftly, but it wouldn't do for his neighbor to begin focusing on his slashed hands. Some of the gashes were rather deep, so on his way out of the door he popped on the leather gloves for added security, then headed for the SUV in the distance. Ah, the SUV was a beauty - bloodstone with matching leather seats. Much nicer than the black buggy with the rickety seat that Nightmare used to pull him in through the cobblestone streets of London with the aid of the sodium lamp posts lighting the crooked trail. Quentin's thoughts turned towards his unknown neighbor. He knew very little about her, other than knowing that she liked riding her ugly bug-eyed mare on moonlit nights. He'd caught a glimpse of them on several occasions, her shapely silhouette and the chalky whiteness of the mare's teeth almost blinding him through the distance. Oddly enough, Nightmare found 'beauty in the beast'. The neighboring ranch house shimmered in the distance and as Quentin pulled the SUV into the circle-drive and anchored the brake, he delivered a slight mocking laugh as he studied the structure. So humanly decorated, he thought, his sharp eyes touching the rooster weathervane, the concrete fountain of a mermaid next to the veranda and the manicured garden dotted with poppies, lilies and roses. He preferred a good crop of wolfbane himself for he didn't like intruders. The entryway to the house was shrouded in darkness, suiting Quentin well. It was with great effort that he held his fangs in rein. Women tended to overreact, to panic. It was too early in the night for hysterics, and if present circumstance was any indication, then it proved to be a long night ahead. Three knocks later, yet the door remained unanswered. Quentin was about to take leave and find the stable so he could do a bit of investigating on his own. Then the voice of a woman greeted him through the door, slightly muffled and denoted due to the thickness of the board of oak separating them. However, Quentin's hearing was sharp so the obstruction didn't present a problem. "What do you want?" she asked. "Mam, I'm Quentin Brooks, your neighbor," he began, his voice clear, concise. "I'd like to speak to you -" Suddenly, the door revolved open, cutting him off in mid-sentence and the beautiful young woman who appeared finished it for him, "About your wayward horse." Quentin wasn't easily stunned or dazzled, yet the woman before him was cocooned in rapturous beauty; unblemished golden-colored skin, emerald-green eyes and blood-red lips. His gaze shifted to the hollows of her long neck then flew back to her face as she drawled, "Well darn. If I had known you were one of us, I wouldn't have waited for your weather-beaten horse to have dragged you over here." Quentin lifted his brows, finding it hard to believe his good fortune. He could have searched the four corners of the earth for an eternity without finding such a beautiful female vampiress. Perhaps Nightmare was worth something after all he went on to decide, anxious to get out of the spurs and tight-fitting jeans.
