Widow Maker - The city lay shrouded in the distance, looming like a fragile virgin clothed in white. Mother Minnie & the Vampire Next Door

As if on cue, he told his mother, "I regret to inform you that we just cannot allow you to continue in this unsafe state.  As we speak, we are arranging to have you transferred to a very nice home so that you will be cared for day and night.  There is nothing that you will want for, mother."

Minnie grazed him with a heated look, barely managing to keep her tongue in check as she drawled, "Nothing except my home."

She knew in her heart of hearts that Sam and Yvonne had been planning something, but she wasn't quite sure what.  And now she could see that she had played right into their hands when she had boasted about her cherished neighbor - a lovely vampire who appeared to truly care about her.  She sure cared deeply about him.  A handsome man with a kind heart was a rare thing indeed - vampire or not!

Sam swallowed hard, perhaps feeling a morsel of guilt over painting his loving mother into a corner.  Why couldn't she see what was best for her?  Perhaps Yvonne had been wrong about the home.  Maybe it might be best to allow his mother to live out her days here.  Moving her into a home would certainly kill her spirits, if not her very soul.

But as he looked towards his beautiful wife who had promised him so many things, when his mother asked, "How long do I have here?" he then answered, "Just tonight. We will collect you in the morning and take you to the home.  You will like it, I'm certain."

Minnie nodded, then rose from the sofa.  "Then you must both leave so I will have time to prepare for the move.  There will be some things that I will want to take with me."

Sam and Yvonne shared another look, only Minnie noticed that this time it was flavored with raw shock.

"I-I never assumed you would be so-so condescending, Mother Minnie," Yvonne blurted out, unable to express her shock and good-fortune.

"Then let it be a lesson to the both of you," Minnie told them, ushering them to the door and noting through the window glass that the sun was swiftly setting in the western sky.  "When one gets old, they often lose their voice.  And when one gets old, they don't have the stamina to fight against the waves that threaten."
